Moving to Northeast Houston: Your Complete Relocation Checklist

Moving is stressful — I've done it enough myself to know. So let me give you a practical checklist for relocating to the Kingwood-Atascocita area that'll make your transition smoother.

60 Days Before Moving

Finalize your home purchase or sale. Research and book a moving company — or reserve a truck if you're going DIY. Start decluttering and donating items you don't need. Notify your employer of your address change if applicable. Research schools and begin the enrollment process.

30 Days Before

Set up utilities at your new address — electricity, water, gas, internet, and trash. Change your address with USPS to forward mail. Update your address with banks, credit cards, insurance, and subscriptions. Transfer medical and dental records and begin finding new providers. Start the process of registering your vehicles in Texas — you have 90 days, but starting early avoids the rush.

The Week Before

Confirm all moving company details. Pack an essentials box with toiletries, clothes, important documents, and medications. Clean out the refrigerator and use up perishables. Take photos of valuable items before they're packed. Arrange care for pets or children on moving day.

Moving Day

Do a final walk-through of your old home. Be present for movers — and tip them, they work hard. Check inventory as items are loaded and unloaded. Inspect your new home before furniture is placed.

Your First Week in the New Home

Change the locks — you don't know who has keys. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Locate the water shut-off and circuit breaker. Introduce yourself to neighbors. Find your essentials: grocery store, gas station, and the route to the nearest hospital.

Your First Month
